Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) can be used to query devices for the values of counters they keep.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a widely used protocol for monitoring the health and welfare of network equipment (eg. routers), computer equipment and even devices like UPSs.

Simple Network Management Program (SNMP) is a protocol for network management services. Network management software typically uses SNMP to query or control the state of network devices like routers and switches. These devices sometimes also generate asynchronous alerts called Traps to inform the management systems of problems.

In the SNMP world most of the counters are 32 bits (from 0 until 4294967295) then they restart to 0.
