File - Extension

About

The file extension is the last three characters at the end of the file path (ie therefore at the end of the file name).

It describes the structure of the content.

On application that may open files such as an operating system or an Integrated development environment, you can associate file extension with respectivement:

• an application
• or plugin extension

For instance, files that ends up:

• with docx would be open with Microsoft Word by the operating system
• with json would be open with a Json Editor by the Integrated development environment
