A proxy is an application (hardware or software) that receives a request and forwards it to another application.

Example

There are proxies in all levels of the OSI model.

On a message level:

• HTTP Proxy
• Email Proxy (ie MTA)

But also on a packet level:

• IP packet (tcp/udp) Proxy
• Ehernet packet (frame) Proxy
• Socket Proxy
