In the windows file system, the path of a file is composed of name separated by the \ backslash character.

The 8.3 Pathname is a shortened version.

8.3 Pathname

A Windows 8.3 Pathname looks like:

C:\Progra~1\Java\...

instead of

C:\Program Files\Java\....
