About

A chip is a set of electronic circuits on one small flat piece (the ''chip“) of semiconductor material, normally silicon.

A chip is also known as:

  • Integrated circuit
  • microchip
  • monolithic integrated circuit

Each chip is responsible for a function, e.g.:

Example

The 74HC00 is a chip device composed:

  • internally of four 2-input NAND gates
  • and externally of 14 pins:
    • 8 input pins (red)
    • 4 output pins (green)
    • 1 pin for connecting to a voltage source (Vcc brown)
    • 1 pin for connecting to the ground. (GND brown)

The chip comes with 4 gates that can be combined to create other logic gates (ie logic function)
